Learn the core rules of Project L in minutes. This quick guide covers setup, turns, actions, and engine-building tips to help you win your first game.
Quick Answer
In Project L, you use three actions per turn to collect pieces and complete puzzles, building an engine that lets you do more with fewer moves. Focus on grabbing high-value pieces early and chaining puzzle completions to outpace your opponents.
Why Engine Building Matters in Project L
Project L looks simple at first: you place a few pieces on a puzzle and score points. But the real depth comes from building an engine. The more pieces you collect, the more puzzles you can complete in a single turn, which in turn earns you even better pieces. This snowball effect is the heart of the game.
A common mistake is to hoard pieces without completing puzzles. While it's tempting to grab every shiny piece, remember that only completed puzzles give you points and bonus pieces. Balance collecting with completing to keep your engine growing.
Another tradeoff to consider: completing a puzzle early can give you a strong piece, but it also reveals a new puzzle from the stack. Sometimes it's better to wait for a puzzle that fits your current pieces perfectly rather than rushing a suboptimal completion.
Project L Rules in Five Steps
- Set Up the Game: Place the puzzle tiles face up in the center. Each player starts with two basic pieces (a 1x1 and a 2x1). Shuffle the puzzle stack and reveal a set number of puzzles based on player count. Each player takes one player board and places their pieces on it. Check the rulebook for the exact number of puzzles to reveal for your player count—this changes with 2, 3, or 4 players.
- Understand the Turn Structure: On your turn, you have exactly three actions. You can use an action to take a piece from the supply, place a piece onto a puzzle, or complete a puzzle. You may use the same action type multiple times, but you cannot exceed three actions total. Plan all three actions before you start—wasting an action on a piece you don't need is a common early-game mistake.
- Take Pieces from the Supply: Use one action to take any single piece from the central supply. Pieces come in various shapes and sizes. The supply is replenished from the bag after each turn, so the available pieces change constantly. Prioritize pieces that match the puzzles you're already working on—grabbing random pieces slows your engine.
- Place Pieces on Puzzles: Use one action to place a piece from your collection onto an available puzzle. The piece must fit exactly within the puzzle's grid without overlapping. Once placed, the piece stays there until the puzzle is completed. Don't place a piece if it blocks you from completing the puzzle later—think ahead about which shapes you'll need.
- Complete Puzzles and Score: When you place the final piece that fills a puzzle completely, you score points equal to the puzzle's value. You also get to take a bonus piece from the top of the piece stack, which is usually a larger or more valuable shape. The completed puzzle is removed and a new one is revealed. Completing puzzles is the only way to score and gain new pieces—always aim to complete at least one puzzle per turn if possible.
